ASSET's
efforts to improve teachers' use of assessment in the classroom have resulted
in the development of two significant products—an assessment model that
can be used with any science module (or unit) and the ASSET Performance-Based
Assessment Framework. The framework has been developed for the STC program
but can be applied to any curricular program.
The
assessment model is completed by teachers who attend the Institute for
Assessment (IFA). It enables them to apply the concepts from the works
of prominent assessment experts such as Richard Stiggins, Wynne Harlan,
and Grant Wiggins that are presented in the institute. The model can be
used as the basis for assessing student learning and improving student
attainment of knowledge, concepts and skills that are presented in the
FOSS, Insights, SEPUP, STC and STC/MS curriculum materials.
The
ASSET Performance-Based Assessment Framework was developed by groups of
teachers who worked in grade-level teams. These teams used the "Understanding
By Design" model developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe to complete
the framework for every module in the STC program. It includes a method
of assessing "enduring learnings" for each module, the criteria to be
assessed, and the descriptors (rubrics) for doing the assessments.
