We Can!® (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition) is a national public education outreach program developed by the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and includes a series of turnkey, science-based materials that educate youth ages 8-13 on how to make healthful food choices, increase activity and reduce screen time.
UPMC Health Plan connected with NIH in 2007 to bring We Can! programming and materials into the community through corporate and non-profit partnerships - an initiative called We Can! Pittsburgh. EQT: Energizing ASSET Hands-on Science in Greene County Schools
As part of its philanthropic community outreach, EQT is funding the ASSET science program in Greene County elementary schools.
Schools participating in this program include: Carmichaels Area Elementary School in the Carmichaels Area School District; Jefferson Morgan Elementary School in the Jefferson-Morgan School District; Bobtown Elementary School in the Southeastern Greene School District and Springhill-Freeport and Graysville Elementary Schools in the Greene School District.
Now in full implementation, 78 participating teachers are receiving ASSET’s Institutes for Inquiry and Assessment as well as professional development on over 11 science modules. Through EQT’s commitment to the Greene County region, more than 1,900 students are experiencing ASSET’s hands-on, inquiry-based approach to learning that will spark their interest and fuel their learning, preparing them to think-critically, discover and innovate for success now and in future STEM related careers.
Participating teachers commented, “…this training provided us with usable, constructive, formative assessment techniques” and “this was terrific…it provided me with very beneficial approaches that will improve my teaching and the atmosphere in my classroom.”
